The purpose of this study is to look at food and the effect of repeated presentation of foods in 8-12 year-old children. The study requires four visits to our lab lasting about 2 hours followed by three yearly visits for two years. Our laboratory is located at the University at Buffalo South Campus, Farber Hall.
The first four visits consist of an orientation visit and three laboratory visits. During the orientation visit you and your child will be asked to read and sign the consent and assent forms. Each of the three laboratory sessions will last between 90 and 120 minutes. We ask that your child not eat or drink anything other than water for three hours prior to the laboratory sessions or eat the study foods 24 hours before. During one session, your child will complete some questionnaires about different foods. Additionally, you and your child will tell us about his/her physical activity over a period of one week. Your child will be asked to play a computer game to earn points for food to eat. Your child will also be asked to complete questionnaires about their hunger and liking of certain foods at each visit.
Three visits to the lab will be scheduled each year for two years during which your child will perform behavioral tasks, and recall dietary intake and physical activity. Participants will receive a $20 gift certificate for each completed visit and a $100 bonus after completing the study for a total of $300 in gift cards.
