Dartmouth Grad Externship Program 2014

October 9, 2014

Dear Graduate Alum,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Dartmouth graduate community to ask if you would be willing to host a graduate student for a daylong externship at your place of work during the month of December, 2014. As current Dartmouth graduate students begin to explore career options, we would like to help them gain insight into the skills, organizational culture, and work environments in the professional world. For the past three years, these experiences have been found highly influential in determining students’ career choices, and both alums and students have given overwhelming positive feedback. I hope you can take part in this growing program!

A daylong externship could include the following:

*Describing your occupation and career path.

*Describing the mission of your organization, its operating principles, culture, and values.

*Conversations with junior and senior staff, who can describe their daily tasks, key skills of their job, and career path to their position.

*Providing feedback on the student’s resume.

*Attendance at meetings

We encourage a 'de-briefing' conversation at the end of the day to discuss and briefly evaluate the externship experience, both from the student’s and your perspectives, although we appreciate time factors may not always make this possible.

Externships provide an invaluable opportunity for graduate students to make real-world connections outside academia and the advice and experience imparted by our alum has a very real impact on their career choices. For alum it is a wonderful way to connect with current graduate students and give back to the Dartmouth community in a very practical way. I do hope you will participate.

I will be announcing the Grad Alumni Externship options to our students in November. Students will sign up in the Graduate Studies Office. Students are paired with “hosts” who most closely match the students’ interests and ability to travel to the host location. Once matched, students will be instructed to e-mail their host, followed by a telephone call, to schedule a convenient date/time for the externship. While every effort is made to involve everyone who expresses interest, regrettably matches might not be possible this year. However, there will be opportunities for you to be matched in future years!

If you are interested in participating in this program please fill out a brief questionnaire by November 3 at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NPB7B5M, so that we may obtain your contact information, position, and employer. If you signed-up last year, there is no need to sign-up again unless your information has changed. Although we hope all externships can take place during December, we understand that this might not be appropriate for some alumni. Please do not let this deter you from participating – we are somewhat flexible on accommodating other dates and can coordinate with you on alternative dates.

I am hopeful that many graduate alumni will generously give some of their time to help current graduate students in their career exploration!

Sincerely,

Kerry Landers
Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Affairs
