What is the purpose of this research?
• This research will allow us to examine people’s beliefs about the Theory of Evolution, the psychological structure of those beliefs (whether there are ‘types’ of beliefs), and psychological factors that are associated with beliefs about the Theory of Evolution.

Who is conducting the research?
• We are a team of researchers in the Schools of Psychology and Biological Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington. Drs. Wilson and Ritchie are supervising the project, with research assistance from Kathryn Campbell. This research has been approved by the University ethics committee.

What is involved if you agree to participate?
• If you agree to participate in this study you will complete a survey in which you will be asked to indicate your beliefs about the Theory of Evolution and other, related, ideas. For example, you will be asked to indicate whether or not you agree with statements like “Humans have developed over millions of years from earlier species“ and “All life on earth exists in pretty much the same form as it originally did.” Other questions assess relevant psychological factors and background information, for example whether or not you identify with a particular religious tradition and which political party you identify most closely with. We anticipate that the survey will take you no more than 25 minutes to complete. During the research you are free to withdraw, without any penalty, at any point before your survey has been completed.

Privacy and Confidentiality
• This survey is completely anonymous. Please do not put your name on it anywhere. At the end of the survey you will be given an option to link to a separate website where you can enter your email address to receive a summary of the results when they become available.
• We will keep your survey for at least five years after publication.
• In accordance with the requirements of some scientific journals and organisations, your coded survey data may be shared with other competent researchers. Your coded data may be used in other, related studies.
• A copy of the coded data will remain in the custody of Dr. Marc Wilson in the School of Psychology.

What happens to the information that you provide?
• The data you provide may be used for one or more of the following purposes: The overall findings may be submitted for publication in a scientific journal, or presented at scientific conferences, and will be disseminated through media releases in late 2009.
• Please note that the data from your surveys will NOT be used to stereotype or denigrate any individual or group.

If you would like to know the results of this study, they will be available approximately November 2009.

Thank you for considering participation in this research.
