The introduction of the new terms and conditions of the 2016 junior doctor contract in England put a spotlight on many issues for trainees. One such important issue is pay. Although not a new problem, this has given us a chance to explore trainees’ experiences of pay/salary, how it is processed in different Trusts and the effects of late or incorrect payments. Our survey in 2017 highlighted numerous concerns and, using those results, we are moving forward with the Royal College of Anaesthetists and NHS Employers to try and improve conditions. We are repeating this survey to gather more data on pay issues and strengthen our position for negotiations with NHS Employers and the Department of Health.
