Nau mai, haere mai | Welcome

Thank you for your interest in joining the national Arts in Corrections Network, facilitated by Arts Access Aotearoa | Putanga Toi ki Aotearoa. This network brings together educators, facilitators, practitioners, academics, iwi and hapū representatives, and individuals with lived carceral experience to support arts-based mahi in Aotearoa's prisons and Community Corrections.

The national Arts in Corrections Network was established to support and enhance the role of arts in rehabilitation and reintegration in Aotearoa’s prisons and Community Corrections. Its purpose and values have been collaboratively defined by current members to reflect the collective vision and aspirations of the network.

Importantly, to ensure inclusivity, it is free.

Purposes:
Foster collaboration: Build connections among arts educators, practitioners, academics, iwi and hapū representatives, and individuals with lived carceral experience to strengthen the impact of Arts in Corrections.

Promote rehabilitation through the arts: Advocate for creative programmes that empower individuals, foster identity transformation, and support positive reintegration into society.

Encourage best practices: Share resources, knowledge, and training opportunities to uplift the standard and efficacy of arts-based initiatives in corrections.

Support Inclusion and Diversity: Embrace the diverse cultural heritage of Aotearoa, particularly through the incorporation of Te Ao Māori and kaupapa Māori approaches.

Values:
Manaakitanga (Care and Respect): Uphold the dignity of all individuals engaged in Arts in Corrections work, fostering mutual support and understanding.

Whanaungatanga (Connection): Strengthen relationships and community ties through shared creative practices.

Tikanga (Cultural integrity): Honour cultural protocols and practices, ensuring the arts reflect the values and traditions of their participants.

Tika me Pono (Integrity and honesty): Commit to transparency and accountability in all actions and communications.

Kotahitanga (Unity): Work together to create a collective impact greater than the sum of individual efforts.
