1. Welcome to My Survey

Description of the Study and Your Part in it

Dr. Lon Johnston, Associate Professor of Social Work at Texas A&M University—Commerce, is inviting you to take part in a research study. As of April 15, 2015, 37 states and the District of Columbia (DC) have legalized unions between people of the same sex.  However, Texas is one of the states that does not permit this type of marriage.  This study seeks information from graduates of BSW or MSW programs in Texas accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) regarding their attitudes toward same-sex marriage.

Your part in the study will be to complete a survey that asks about your beliefs and attitudes about same-sex marriage  and requests some demographic information.

It will take you about 30 minutes to participate in this study.

Eligibility to Participate in the Study

If you reside in Texas and have a BSW and/or MSW from a CSWE accredited social work program you are eligible to participate in this study.

Risks and Discomforts

There are no foreseeable risks to you by participating in this study.

Possible Benefits

I do not know of any way you would benefit directly from taking part in this study. However, this research may help social work educators determine areas that may need to be strengthened in their teaching on same-sex issues.

Incentives

No financial or other compensation will be offered for your participation in this study.

Protection of Privacy and Confidentiality

I will do everything I can to protect your privacy and confidentiality. I will not tell anybody outside of the research team that you were in this study or what information I collected about you in particular.

I might be required to share the information collected from you with the Texas A&M University-Commerce Office of Sponsored Programs and the federal Office for Human Research Protections. If this happens, the information would only be used to find out if I ran this study properly and protected your rights in the study. The data will be retained for three years after the study is concluded.

The data will be stored in a locked file in the office of Dr. Lon Johnston at Texas A&M University—Commerce, and in a locked file on his computer.  I, and a Graduate Assistant for Research (GAR), will be the only people who will have access to this data in order to ensure confidentiality.

Choosing to Be in the Study

You do not have to be in this study. Participation is voluntary. You may choose not to take part and you may choose to stop taking part at any time without penalty. You will not be punished in any way if you decide not to be in the study or to stop taking part in the study.

You may choose to stop taking part in this study after today. If you do, we will not collect any more information from you. However, we would keep and use the information we had already collected from you.
