INSPIRE: Implementing Novel Solutions for Promoting Cultural Change In Geoscience Research & Education

Open to: NYC High school science teachers, passionate about incorporating geoscience topics into their curriculum, seeking to support student access to hands-on, geoscience labs

The Program:

Stage One: Summer (July 2024) Stage Two: Academic Year
(Fall 2024 and Spring 2025)
Geoscience Intensive (2 weeks in-person): Engage with geoscientists in lectures and activities, participating with high school students in fieldwork to further their geoscience research as a professional development activity
Remote Professional Development (2 weeks remote): Engage with geoscience content and pedagogy to create geosciences curriculum
Engage in professional learning community to hone:
- Accessible pedagogies
- Inquiry-based lab activities
Commitment:
July 11th: remote orientation day
July 15-18th, 22-25th (8:30 AM- 3 PM, in-person at City Tech CUNY): Engage with geoscientists to learn more about specific topics alongside motivated high school students Perform fieldwork for geosciences data collection Visit Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Begin geosciences unit plan development
Commitment: ~10 hours/month
Monthly professional learning community meeting
Geoscience unit plan development
Teachers will develop their own geoscience unit plan to pilot in their classrooms during the academic year


Stipend: $10,000 for participation from July 2024 - June 2025

Deadline: applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until May 31st, 2024
