The Role of Board Members at the McLean County Arts Center

Mission Statement: We encourage and promote the appreciation, study, cultivation, development, and practice of art for the benefit of all the people, cultures, and communities of McLean County.

Thank you for considering joining the McLean County Arts Center as a member of our non-profit’s Board of Directors. The Arts Center is a regional voice for the arts in Central Illinois. This is an exciting time of transition for our center and our board. Our full-time and part-time staff is small but growing.

The number of members on the board range from 12 to 18. A person elected to the board serves a 3-year term beginning in September. After that term expires, there is an option to be elected for 1 additional 3-year term.

Below are listed expectations of board membership to help you understand the time commitment of this position.

New Board Members will attend an onboarding meeting in October after they are elected to the board – approximately 1 hour
Board members are expected to attend a one-hour, monthly, full board meeting on the 3rd Wednesday from 5 to 6 PM at the MCAC. We have approximately 10 meetings a year.

Officers are expected to attend a one-hour, monthly executive board meeting on the 2nd Wednesday from 5 to 6 PM at the MCAC.

Each board member serves on at least 1 committee. Some committees meet monthly for about an hour, while others only meet a few times each year. (committee options range from Events, Fundraising, Finance, Building, Nominations, Education, Exhibitions and Membership)

Board members are expected to prepare for monthly meetings by reading emails and documents sent in advance (10 to 15 minutes max)

There is also the expectation that board members will: attend opening receptions as an “Ambassador” (about 1 hour approx. every 6 weeks), participate in a once-a-year ½ day retreat, volunteer at Sugar Creek Arts Festival, and attend the annual fundraiser.

Please take the time to answer the following questions. Your answers will help us get to know you better. Your application will be forwarded to our Nominating Committee for consideration and elections will occur in August.
