Bereavement, attendance and support in education

Thank you for your interest in this survey.

Its purpose is to gather important insights on how pupil and student absences related to bereavement are currently recorded, monitored, and understood within schools and other education settings. The information collected will help identify current practices, challenges, and potential areas for improvement in supporting bereaved pupils and students.

Who is running the survey?

It is being run by the Childhood Bereavement Network, on behalf of the Children's Grief Awareness Week steering group.

How long will the survey take to complete?

We think the questionnaire will take about 10 minutes to complete. If you want to have a break while you are answering it, you can save your answers and come back to it later. (**Please note: you will need to use the same device and web browser, and have cookies enabled, for the survey to remember your answers.**). Please complete the survey by 5pm on Friday 12 December.

What if I get upset?

We understand that answering these questions and thinking about the impact of the bereavement on children and young people can be upsetting. If the survey stirs up difficult feelings for you or you would like some support, we have provided a link to some useful organisations at the end of the survey.

Who will look after my data?

The Childhood Bereavement Network is hosted by the National Children’s Bureau (NCB). By completing this survey and submitting your answers, you are giving your consent to NCB to take part in this survey. The survey is anonymous, and we are not collecting personal data that identifies you. We will delete the anonymous data once we have analysed it. We will share the anonymous answers with our partners in the Children's Grief Awareness Week steering group to support our shared campaigning and advocacy work on behalf of bereaved children and young people.

If you work in a school and would be interested in taking part in follow-up research or further discussion on this topic, you have the option to provide your name and email address on the next page so that we can contact you. NCB is required to comply with the UK GDPR. We rely on the lawful basis of legitimate interest to collect this information about you. Please read our Privacy Statement for more information about how NCB processes your personal data.
