School Application to Participate in Professional Learning  for School Teams

The Math and Science Bureau of the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) is ecstatic to offer professional learning (PL) supporting Grades K–12 science instruction in public schools! The MSB invites New Mexico schools to participate in school team professional learning leveraging the New Mexico Instructional Scope Science and NM STEM Ready! Science Standards by engaging in instruction and pedagogical best practices for storyline implementation and/or developing and using effective 3-dimensional formative assessment tasks to foster equitable science teaching and learning. 

For best results in the implementation of these professional learning opportunities the Math and Science Bureau (MSB) defines a school team consisting of:
  • One school/district/charter administrator or instructional coach who is responsible for providing professional learning, 
  • One school/district/charter instructional leader who is able to make school decisions, and 
  • Eighty (80%) of school staff responsible for science instruction in the school
MSB does acknowledge that this may not be possible and will work with schools/districts/charters to create a school to best meet the LEA's needs.
School teams are invited to complete an application form for any combination of professional learning activities to support in: 
  • Storylines (Elementary, Middle, and High School)
  • Three-Dimensional Formative Assessment Science Tasks (Elementary, Middle, and High School) 
Each professional learning consists of :
  • 16 hours of virtual professional learning starting in February and continuing to the end of the school year. 
  • The sessions will consist of a kick-off event, synchronous and asynchronous sessions
NM STEM Ready! Science Storylines (Elementary, Middle, and High School Grade Bands)
These interactive sessions will leverage pedagogy and best instructional practices for implementing NGSS storylines into classrooms using high-quality instructional materials by: 
  • Analyze instructional materials for the coherence of the material from the student perspective and its alignment to STEM Ready! Science Standards
  • Identify how students think about the ideas in the storyline as they progress through the instruction of a unit
  • Identify the student perspective of coherence and sensemaking of phenomena within a unit
  • Integrate Storyline Routines into classrooms by utilizing a reflective learning cycle.

NM STEM Ready! Science Formative Task Development (Elementary, Middle, and High School Grade Bands)
Professional Learning will engage educators to:

  • Engage in collaborative analysis of 3D student work
  • Use formative assessment evidence to center students'3D learning
  • Modify formative assessments to meet criteria for high-quality, equitable 3D assessments
Instructional Coaches and Administrators learn to: 
  • Cultivate a professional learning community around using student work to monitor and improve 3D teaching and learning
  • Create structures and supports to sustain assessment for learning practices in your school
Expectations of the PED, district staff, principals, and teachers

The PED will maintain open lines of communication with participating district and school staff to support understanding of project expectations and to provide technical assistance as needed.

The PED will:
  • Pay participating educators a stipend for complete and active participation, as outlined in The Teacher(s) Will section
  • Provide substitute reimbursements for virtual convenings occurring during school hours
  • Coordinate with vendors and school teams to schedule sessions
District staff/Principals will:
  • Ensure that the participating teachers have release time during or after school to fully engage in virtual professional learning
  • Participate with the school team in professional learning activities
  • Ensuring conditions, i.e. technology and time, make it possible for teachers to participate in all required activities
  • Ensure all teachers meet their respective responsibilities as outlined in The Teacher(s) Will section to remain in compliance with project expectations
  • Participate in all evaluation activities associated with the project during the 2021–22 school year
Teacher(s) will:
  • Actively participate in all professional learning events (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Participate in all evaluation activities associated with the project during the 2021–22 school year
