Response Model for Hate Incidents in Alberta
Your answers to the questions will help to inform the creation of a provincial Response Model for hate incidents. The Response Model is being developed by Coalitions Creating Equity (CCE), a province-wide initiative that involves similar collaboratives in Wood Buffalo, Lethbridge, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. CCE brings together regional community networks, organizations and individuals across Alberta to collaboratively address issues of discrimination, inequity and racism. This project aims to build capacity in areas of local community engagement, leadership support, and resource mobilization.
Key Definitions: According to the Canadian Criminal Code, a HATE CRIME is defined as a crime motivated by hate, based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, gender, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, etc. All hate crimes should be reported to the police.
A HATE INCIDENT is a non-criminal action committed against a person or property, with the same motives as for a hate crime. Hate incidents are often not reported or documented. A response model for hate incidents will provide guidelines for documenting hate incidents and supporting people who have been the targets of hate incidents.
This survey is for people who have:
been the target of a hate incident
witnessed a hate incident
tried to help someone who has been the target of a hate incident.
The survey is anonymous and should take 5 – 10 minutes to complete.
