Introduction - Data work in philanthropic foundations

On behalf of Philanthropy Europe Association (Philea) and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, we thank you for taking the time to complete the following survey on “Data work in philanthropic foundations.” We recommend to take 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. In case you need time to reflect on some of the questions answers can be provided in multiple web browser sessions.

As we recognise the growing importance of work relating to data - in particular on data science, data management and artificial intelligence – Philea and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo have developed the following survey with the aim to map out what activities foundations in Europe currently undertake in the realm of data.

Philea currently hosts a community of practice on data science, which is a safe space for data scientists and enthusiasts from the sector to exchange different practices and know-how. However, beyond this forum, both parties would like to further explore what is being undertaken by other philanthropic actors in Europe.

The survey is organised into three sections:
1)      Data management
2)      Data science and artificial intelligence
3)      Data philanthropy

Analysis of the survey will be a joint activity between Philea and Fondazione di San Paolo*. Both of these parties will have access to the data points that will result in a jointly published final report, that will be publicly available.

Individual responses will not be reported, rather the report will utilise aggregated responses.

The deadline to fill in responses has been extended to 14th May 2023.

Gartner, a leading international ICT consulting firm, will critically assess the final draft of the report and the aggregated data providing interesting insights and also benchmarking with the for-profit sector.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this survey, please do not hesitate to reach out below:

*Please be assured that Philea will treat your answers with the utmost discretion. The information collected will not be publicly associated with the name of the organisation, unless the respondent gives us their consent to do so. The final report will only feature anonymised or aggregated information. Findings of the survey will be shared with all respondents
