Please Read This Before You Begin

Thank you for your interest in applying to produce a program on KFAI. Please answer every question as completely as possible, keeping in mind that members of the Content Advisory Committee will have multiple proposals to review.

KFAI is accepting program abstracts for the 2 to 4am time slot on Thursday morning.   Overnight shows occupy a distinct space in the radio universe.  If there is any place on the schedule where you can truly get “out there”, it’s in the middle of the night.   The program that goes in this slot will provide companionship for listeners who work or play all night, those who simply can’t sleep, some who are dreaming and others who only think they are.

The show in this time slot follows Travo Ramo Fa Fa Fa, a high energy eclectic music show with lots of rock and punk.  It leads listeners to Power Hour RnB, a more leisurely paced and mainstream show with a preference for love songs.

We’re interested in reading about and hearing your proposal to occupy this unique space in our schedule with an engaging and entertaining show that speaks to KFAI’s mission:

KFAI is a volunteer-based community radio station that exists to broadcast information, arts and entertainment programming for an audience of diverse racial, social and economic backgrounds.   By providing a voice for people ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media, KFAI increases understanding between peoples and communities, while fostering the values of democracy and social justice.

While we don’t require any one program to serve every single component of the mission statement, we do want KFAI shows to be distinctive, creative and rooted in the community.

You may submit your proposals by downloading a form from the Content Advisory Committee page at KFAI.org.

Or you may fill out an application online using Survey Monkey.

Along with the submission form, please deliver a 30 to 60 minute sample of your proposed show on CD, or as an .mp3 or .wav file via e-mail, Soundcloud, or a file sharing service such as Dropbox.

Proposals open:  July 11
Proposals closed:  August 6
Committee Decision:  August 14

Some tips about submitting a compelling proposal:

Extended music mixes with minimal host presence may be great for clubs, but radio programs are also about curation and companionship.  Your music program abstract will be reviewed for personality as well as for the tunes you choose.  Let us hear how you perform as a radio host.

Applicants for this slot should have a clear vision of who they intend to serve and how their program will add to KFAI’s legacy of community service.

Overnight hours are subject to relaxed FCC broadcast regulations (known as “Safe Harbor”),  so proposals for this time slot can include songs with lyrics that might be considered profane or indecent and not for broadcast at other times of day.   This relaxes policy applies only to song lyrics.  Even during “Safe Harbor” hours, KFAI asks hosts and guests to keep their personal language and commentary “FCC clean”.
