San Francisco Seawall Earthquake Safety and Disaster Prevention Program
Background and Introduction
· Thank you for taking the time to complete this online survey! It should take about five minutes to complete.
· As you may know, San Francisco’s northern waterfront, from Aquatic Park to Mission Creek, was transformed from a tidal mudflat into an urban maritime waterfront by constructing a massive seawall and filling behind to create hundreds of acres of new land. This generational undertaking started in 1878 and took nearly four decades to complete. The Embarcadero Seawall has silently served San Francisco and the region for over 100 years—contributing to prosperity, city form and identity, and connecting generations of residents, workers, and visitors to the bay.
Today, the waterfront is as important as ever, however, the Seawall is showing its age. Recent studies have indicated deterioration, significant earthquake risk, and increasing flood risk due to both settlement and rising sea levels. In response, the City created the Seawall Earthquake Safety Program, a Port-led effort to improve or replace the Embarcadero Seawall while considering codependent infrastructure, earthquake and flood risk timelines, and the city’s needs today and into the future.
· The Port’s Seawall Team is currently planning a broad, citywide education, outreach, and stakeholder involvement effort to support the work we need to accomplish together. This survey is an important early step in that process.
· The purpose of this survey is to understand your familiarity with the Port of San Francisco and the Seawall Earthquake Safety Program and how best to engage you moving forward.
· Next steps: The Port’s Seawall Team will capture key findings from the survey and use them to develop a broader stakeholder involvement plan.
· We greatly appreciate your participation in this survey.
