Contributions are invited from all members of the hospital community for this annual symposium that showcases the range and quality of our research work

Submission Guidelines

To register for the 2020 Symposium and submit your abstract, you will need to do the following:
  1. Format your abstract to the specifications detailed below
  2. Complete the Questionnaire on this website, including submitting your abstract in the provided space (400 words maximum)
  3. Click "Submit" at the bottom of the page
  4. Email your abstract submission as a Microsoft Word document (.doc) to medicalresearchsymposium@gmail.com
  5. A confirmation email will be sent to you

The closing date for abstract submission is the 21st of August, 2020

You will be contacted mid-September regarding the outcome of your submission.


Formatting Guidelines

  1. Arial font, size 11
  2. All text should be aligned to the left
  3. No additional formatting of the text should be used (e.g. bold, italics, underlining)
  4. 2.5cm margins should be maintained
  5. The Abstract Title should be at the top of the page
  6. This should be followed by a list of authors, with initials before the surname (e.g. AB Smith1*, CD Jones2)
  7. An asterisk should denote the presenting author (as seen in example above)
  8. The Department(s) from which the work originated should then be listed under the authors, referring to numbered superscripts placed after each surname (for the example above: 1Department of Medicine)
  9. Word count limits must be maintained as below
    1. Title (25 words)
    2. Background and Aim (100 words)
    3. Methods (100 words)
    4. Results (150 words)
    5. Conclusion (50 words)
    6. The body of the abstract (excluding title) must not exceed 400 words
  10. Pictures or large tables should NOT be included in the abstract

Microsoft Word Document Formatting and Submission

The word document submitted via email should be identical to what is submitted on this website. The final emailed copy should be titled as follows:

(First Author Initials)_(First Author Surname)_(First 5 words of title in all capitals).doc

For the example given above:

AB_Smith_INVESTIGATION OF PROTEINS INVOLVED IN.doc

The final word document should be submitted to medicalresearchsymposium@gmail.com


Scoring of Abstracts
  1. Abstracts will be scored by an independent review panel of experienced clinicians/scientists/researchers
  2. Abstracts will be graded according to presentation, scientific method and validity, and implications for further research/clinical practice
  3. Following this review process, authors will be contacted in mid-September for oral and poster presentations.
  4. Applicants who are unsuccessful in qualifying for an oral presentation will automatically be offered a poster presentation.

Categories and Prizes

Categories
  • Basic Science Research - research which is predominantly laboratory-based
  • Clinical Research - research predominantly involving human subjects
  • Undergraduate Research - research undertaken by a student at St George Hospital, Sutherland Hospital, or affiliated universities (e.g. UNSW, UoW)

Oral Presentations
  1. Basic Science Research - 1st and 2nd prize
  2. Clinical Research - 1st and 2nd prize
  3. Undergraduate Research - 1st prize only

Poster Presentations
  1. Best Poster Prize
