Thank you for your interest in applying to the Survival Skills for Supervisors program! Your efforts to enhance your skills and become a better people leader are greatly appreciated by our organization. Before moving on to the application form, please take some time to read over the program requirements and expectations below. 
Program Frequency: 2 hours X 4 sessions

Objectives
  • Gain familiarity with the core values of supervising people at UOIT.
  • Build a shared understanding of policies, procedures, resources and common supervisory approaches.
  • Acquire foundational knowledge of the institution.
  • Share and reflect on experiences with other participants.
  • Gain insight on the expectations of supervisors.
Who is eligible?

This program is intended primarily for Faculty of Science – Tenure Track Faculty and Teaching Faculty.

Program Attendance and Expectations

Attending and actively participating in each of the sessions will maximize the success of the program and assure an optimal learning environment for all. It is expected that all participants, with the support of their superiors, will attend all four sessions. Participants who miss more than one session of the program may be ineligible to complete the program with their cohort.

It is important that all applicants carefully review the program schedule in advance to ensure adherence to the strict attendance and participation requirements.

Module 1: February 5, 2018

Understanding University Resources
  • Know the key university resources available to you as a supervisor and when to access them
  • Overview of relevant policies and procedures that govern academic support staff positions at UOIT
  • Understanding a supervisor’s role in promoting employee health, safety and wellness
  • Brief review of the Short Term Disability process, Return to Work programs and Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
  • Workplace accommodations
  • Identifying how and when to engage your HR partners

Module 2:  March 9, 2018

Supervising the Work of Others
  • Understand your role as a supervisor and your management style.
  • Engaging employees in order to maximize their potential.
  • Implement delegation tools and understand why it is important to do so.
  • Learn how to set SMART goals.
  • Influence and support Individual Development Plans.

Module 3: April 16, 2018

Your Role as a Supervisor – Feedback, Recognition and Coaching
  • Review of the UOIT Performance Management process.
  • Learn how to prepare for feedback and discuss the coaching process.
  • Learn how to conduct a performance conversation and complete a performance review at UOIT.
  • Learn about Performance Improvement Plans.

Module 4: May 14, 2018

Supervising in a Unionized Environment
  • Understanding of the pivotal role supervisors play in a complex labour relations environment.
  • Administration of the TA/RA collective agreement.
    • Appointments
    • Discipline
    • Right to representation
    • General overview of the grievance process
  • Identify how and when to engage your Academic Affairs partners
