Opening up Restaurants/Businesses

Today, sidewalk cafes can only be open on a sidewalk that has six feet of clearance for pedestrians. As a result of this rule, sidewalk cafes are very limited on Clark, Halsted and Lincoln, and Division, our major restaurant streets. The city is considering a number of options. We want your opinion about possible options for temporary changes for the outdoor dining season.

Almost all of our streets have bus lanes, bike lanes, and parking meters. All of these issues must be considered in deciding what to do.

Closing entire streets and push through traffic to side streets to allow dining in the street, change bus and bike routes, and pay the parking meter company hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Change a street to a one-way street, put cafes in the parking lane, move the parking lane into the street, and reroute one direction of bus traffic to a nearby street.

Restrict streets to bus and cycling use only and have cars use adjoining streets, so traffic is lighter to allow curbside dining.

Close alleys behind restaurants to allow dining in the alley.

Use one or more of these options, but limit the closings to only the peak hours of use, like evenings.
