Study Title: Service Member Post-traumatic Stress and Growth
Investigators: Athena Hubbard
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Daniel Holland, Fielding Graduate University, Department of Psychology

WHAT IS THIS STUDY ABOUT?

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Athena Hubbard from Fielding Graduate University, Department of Psychology. The purpose of this study is to identify different ways that service members respond when they experience highly stressful or traumatic events.  The answers you provide will help the researchers and practitioners better understand how families experience stress and growth following times of high stress/trauma. Some questions will ask you about symptoms you may have experienced after your traumatic event and the ways that you may have changed both positively and negatively.  Others will ask you about your relationship satisfaction with your significant other. It is important to note for the accuracy of this study that participants may only take the study one time and compensation will not be provided for additional completions. IP addresses will be used only to verify that a participant has taken the survey only one time as well as to confirm that the participant is a United States citizen residing in the United States.

WHY AM I BEING ASKED TO BE IN THE STUDY?

You are invited to be in the study because:

• - You are a military service member.
• - You speak English.
• - You are a citizen of the United States.
• - You are between the ages of 18 and 65.
• - Within the past five years, you experienced a highly stressful event.

If you do not meet the description above, you are not eligible to participate in the study.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE IN THIS STUDY?

Based upon previous survey research of this type, we are expecting 300+ participants.

HOW LONG WILL THE STUDY TAKE?

You will be asked to complete a series of online questionnaires that will last approximately 30 minutes.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN THIS STUDY?

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You can decide not to be in the study and you can change your mind about being in the study at any time. There will be no penalty to you. If you want to stop being in the study, you can discontinue the survey.

Will I get paid?

Compensation

Compensation in the amount of $1.50 will be provided to each unique participant from  one IP address from this researcher through Mechanical Turk upon completion of the survey. Duplicate completed surveys from the same IP address will not be compensated.  You must be a United States citizen living in the United States at the time the survey is completed, which will also be verified per IP address. You will only be compensated one time per IP address and cannot take the survey more than one time. You must be an adult of at least 18 years of age. No compensation will be provided for incomplete surveys or surveys.  Compensation will not be provided if these conditions are not maintained. Please allow 14 business days from your time of completion for thorough data review and appropriate compensation.

WILL BEING IN THIS STUDY HELP ME?

Being in this study may help you develop some insight into your own situation based on the answers that you provide. Information from this study might help researchers understand the types of common stressors associated with being in the military community.
