It’s mid-season and you notice patches of stunted, yellowing plants in your soybean field. The crop appears to be maturing long before it should.  

You dig up an affected plant, remove dirt from the roots and take a close look to see that they’re stunted, discoloured and have fewer nitrogen-fixing nodules than expected. They are also covered in small creamy white dots. What is going on here?
