More research is needed to improve the health care outcomes of Latinos. Less than 7% of clinical trials have been conducted in Latinos, thereby, limiting the effectiveness of health care interventions in this underserved ethnic group. 

PURPOSE
The purpose of this research grant is to provide $1,000 to a Latino Ph.D. student who is a member of NAHN and who is conducting either quantitative or qualitative research to improve health care outcomes of the Latino population. Allocation of the funds will be based on the quality of the proposed research, the future promise of the applicant as a Latino researcher, approval of the dissertation chair, IRB approval, and the research budget.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The applicant must:
·       Be a registered nurse with a current license.
·       Be enrolled in a Ph.D. doctoral program.
·       Submit a completed research application package and signed research agreement.
·       Be ready to implement a research project when funding is received.
·       Complete the project within one (1) year of funding.
·       Submit a final report to the NAHN Board of Directors.
·       Submit the manuscript to Hispanic Health Care International.
·       Present at the NAHN Annual Conference.

BACKGROUND
In July of 1996, Maria Tereza Aguilar-Cuellar, the mother of 6 children and 15 grandchildren, was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 62 years old. As a Latino, she had never smoked a day in her life. She died 5 months later in December of 1996. Her daughter Patricia Emilia Cuellar-Toben was diagnosed with breast cancer in February of 1996 at 39 years old. She passed away 5 years later leaving behind her husband and 3 young children.

This grant was developed is in honor of “Nena” and “Tia Pat” - Norma Cuellar’s (President of NAHN 2018-2020) mother and sister.
