CONNECT - PROTECT - EDUCATE
The Ngā Kaitiaki ō Mauao Project was launched by Mauao Trust in September 2025 to CONNECT, PROTECT and EDUCATE on behalf of Mauao.

Everyone who visits Mauao is inherently a Kaitiaki (guardian) of Mauao. It is our collective responsibility to take care of his health and wellbeing for the betterment of Mauao, our community and the wildlife that make Mauao their home.

Registering as a Mauao Kaitiaki ensures you are kept up-to-do with opportunities to give back to the maunga, to wānanga (workshop) with other Mauao advocates, and to learn ways in which we can all be the best Kaitiaki we can be, not only for Mauao, but for the whole of the Tauranga Moana area.

Our aim is that every visitor to Mauao thinks, acts and becomes...a Kaitiaki ō Mauao.

A big mihi (acknowledgement) to you for signing up!

Question Title

* 1. Do you whakapapa (connect ancestrally) to Mauao?

The iwi of Mauao are Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Pūkenga and Waitaha-ā-Hei.

Don't be offended by this question! We need to ensure iwi (tribal) members are notified of any iwi-specific wānanga (workshops) or information regarding our ancestral ties to Mauao. We acknowledge that Mauao is important to the entire Tauranga Moana community, and we want you to be a part of our collective efforts to uplift the mana (prestige), mauri (life-force) and wellbeing of Mauao.
