Help Us Build Regional Evidence

Access to affordable and appropriate insurance is an important issue for households, property owners, strata communities and businesses across the Northern Territory.

The Territory's vast geography and diverse settlement patterns can create very different insurance experiences. Distance from service centres, remote and very remote locations, freight and construction costs, smaller markets, limited access to insurers and trades, and exposure to cyclones, severe storms, flooding, bushfires and other natural hazards may all affect the cost, availability and suitability of cover. For some households and businesses, the issue may not only be the cost of insurance, but whether suitable insurance can be obtained at all.

The need for current evidence was reinforced by the 2025–26 wet season. Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina crossed the Cobourg Peninsula and Melville Island and brought damaging winds and very heavy rainfall to parts of the Top End. Rainfall across the Northern Territory was generally above to very much above average, with record rainfall in parts of the Katherine and Daly River catchments and further heavy rainfall affecting northern and Central Australia.

Regional Development Australia Northern Territory (RDA NT) is participating in a broader Northern Australia survey with the Northern Alliance to build current evidence about insurance affordability and availability, and to better understand whether insurance conditions have changed as the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool has been implemented.

Why we are asking you to participate

RDA NT and the Northern Alliance need current, local evidence to understand how insurance costs and availability are affecting people, properties and businesses across Northern Australia. Your experience will help us identify common issues, regional differences and emerging pressures, and provide evidence to support advocacy and discussions with government, insurers and other stakeholders.

We want to hear from homeowners, landlords, strata communities and business owners about their experiences, including changes in premiums and excesses, access to insurers, adequacy of cover, and the effect insurance costs or availability may be having on households, properties and businesses.

The information collected will contribute to a Northern Territory-specific evidence base and support regional advocacy and place-based decision-making.

Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Responses will be aggregated and reported as general findings for the Northern Territory, without identifying any individual or organisation.

The survey should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Responses would be appreciated by close of business, Friday 9 October 2026.
Please select the Council where you live or operate your business.
