Help Us Build Regional Evidence

Access to affordable and appropriate insurance is an important issue for homeowners, landlords, strata communities and businesses across Townsville and North West Queensland.

Insurance experiences can vary significantly across our region, influenced by exposure to cyclones, severe storms and flooding, as well as distance, construction and repair costs, access to trades and the availability of insurers. For some households and businesses, the issue may not only be the cost of insurance, but whether suitable cover can be obtained at all.

Recent weather events have reinforced the need for current local evidence, including widespread rainfall and flooding across parts of North Queensland and the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji in January 2026.

Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland (RDATNWQ) is participating in a broader Northern Australia survey to build current evidence about insurance affordability and availability, and to better understand whether insurance conditions have changed as the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool has been implemented.

We want to hear from homeowners, landlords, strata communities and business owners about their experiences, including changes in premiums and excesses, access to insurers, adequacy of cover, and the impacts insurance costs or availability may be having on households, properties and businesses.

The information collected will provide a regional evidence base to support advocacy and place-based decision-making, and may inform future discussions with government, the insurance sector and the region’s broader priorities for liveability, resilience and sustainable economic growth, consistent with the Regional Investment Framework (RIF).

Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Responses will be aggregated and reported as general findings for Townsville and North West Queensland.

The survey should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Responses would be appreciated by close of business, Friday 2 October 2026.
