WSDOT seeks public input to help inform highway closures during construction

WSDOT is planning to make improvements at the intersection of State Route 500 and Northeast 182nd Avenue by building a compact roundabout in summer 2022.  Located in east Clark County, the intersection is situated along a curved stretch of roadway which makes it difficult to see the intersection or traffic ahead and has a speed limit of 50 mph. Crash data collected between 2013 and 2017 shows a history of crashes along this stretch of highway, most of which were rear-end or at-angle crashes. Increased growth and development over the last several years has resulted in an increase of travel through the area – about 10,000 vehicles travel along this stretch of roadway, daily.

A compact roundabout at this location offers the greatest safety benefit by reducing the potential for severe collisions, while keeping traffic moving through the intersection. Studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than traditional stop signs or intersections with traffic lights. The Federal Highway Administration also has determined that roundabouts can increase traffic capacity by 30 to 50% compared to traditional intersections.

Intermittent lane closures and a full closure of the SR 500 and Northeast 182nd Avenue intersection are required to build the roundabout. To minimize travel delays during construction we need your input

Question Title

* 1. How often do you drive on SR 500 at NE 182nd Avenue?

Question Title

* 2. What days of the week do you drive on SR 500 at NE 182nd Avenue?

Question Title

* 3. How often do you drive on NE 182nd Avenue to or from SR 500?

Question Title

* 4. What days of the week do you drive on NE 182nd Avenue to or from SR 500?

Question Title

* 5. What is the largest type of vehicle that you drive through the intersection of SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue?

Question Title

* 6. To build the roundabout, we will need to close the intersection of SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue for a period of time. Your input will help us decide what closure option works best for the community.  In addition to this project, it is important to highlight that there are other city and county projects planned for construction next year in the same general area which will also have lane restrictions and detours:

·  Clark County will replace the bridge on NE Davis Road at Fifth Plain Creek
·  Clark County will strengthen a bridge located on NE 68th Street at Matney Creek
·  The City of Vancouver will make improvements to SE 1st Street
·  WSDOT will pave SR 500 between NE 162nd Avenue and Leadbetter Road

We are coordinating with the City of Vancouver and Clark County to minimize travel delays during construction next year.

What closure option do you prefer?

Option 1—Full intersection closure (shortest overall duration, high impact):

- Step 1: Crews would reduce both SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue to a single lane for approximately 3 weeks near the intersection. The roadways would be fully reopened when crews are not working.
- Step 2: Crews would fully close the intersection of SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue for approximately one and a half weeks to build the roundabout.

Option 2—Hybrid intersection closure (longest overall duration, medium impact):

- Step 1: To build the roundabout, crews would fully close NE 182nd Avenue at SR 500 for approximately five and a half weeks. Additionally, SR 500 would be reduced to a single lane during the same timeframe.
- Step 2: To complete the work, crews would fully close the intersection of SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue for approximately three days.

Question Title

* 7. If you travel in the area of SR 500 and NE 182nd Avenue, where do you begin and end your travel?

Question Title

* 8. Please share with us any additional comments or feedback you have about the proposed closure schedule or construction of this project.

Thank you for your input!
