Waste Management Facilities in ports
Data collection on port waste management facilities
It is estimated that 8.000.000 tons plastic enter the ocean per year, 80% from land-based sources and 20% from sea-based sources (dumping waste at sea and lost & abandoned fishing gear) (Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean - Science 13 Feb 2015 http://science.sciencemag.org/content/347/6223/768 )
Not all ports have established waste collection facilities to allow crews to comply with MARPOL Annex V. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed Marine Policy Annex V, an international policy covering management of waste and disposal from vessels. We appreciate your support to map port waste management facilities. We developed a short list of questions.
Your answers enable us to create insight in locations where waste management facilities are conform MARPOL Annex V and in which ports facilities are lacking.
We will generate a report based on your data. We will distribute this report to all contributors, United Nations Environmental Program, governments, International Maritime Organization, other relevant stakeholders, to support improving waste management facilities in ports without facilities.
Please fill in one separate survey for each port during your trip
Thank you very much for your support !
You are not required to fill in question 12 in case you like to submit your data anonymous.
