Surveys Act Review and Update
As directed by the deputy minister, the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association has been working with Alberta Environment & Parks for the past two-plus years to update and modernize the 1988 Surveys Act.
In keeping with this government’s theme of reducing red tape, the working group has been looking at sections such as the Director of Surveys duties and some of the less well-known or rarely-used sections of the Surveys Act. The group has also been discussing how the act might be amended to enable the greater use of coordinates (without spelling out all of the details in legislation).
The Government of Alberta will be reaching out to other stakeholders and interested parties to get their feedback on possible changes to the Surveys Act. The Council of the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association wanted to reach out to practitioners to get your feedback on some of the big-picture amendments being considered.
It is hoped that amendments to the Surveys Act will be introduced in the Legislature in Spring 2022.
