Help shape the future of intensive care research

We need your help! We want to find out which questions you think research should answer about adult intensive care. Your views will help guide research for the next 10 years.

This project is, funded by the Intensive Care Society and supported by the James Lind Alliance and National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Who can take part?
  • Adults (18+) living in the UK who have had an intensive care unit (ICU) stay; or
  • Family member, friend, or carer of a person who had an adult ICU stay, including those whose relative or friend died in ICU; or
  • Healthcare professionals working with adults in ICU, and those who work with patients recovering after ICU including in rehabilitation and support services.

What is this survey asking me?
We want to know which questions you think research should answer about adult intensive care. You can tell us about questions relating to care during the ICU stay or during recovery after ICU.

This could include questions about:
o access and admission to ICU
o diagnosis, treatments and support
o outcomes in ICU and/or during recovery

Can I complete the survey with someone else?
Yes, patients may complete the survey with a family member or friend for support if needed, but we ask that responses reflect the patient's own experience and perspective. Healthcare professionals should complete the survey individually.

How should I approach the survey questions?
The Intensive Care JLA PSP will be conducted in accordance with JLA guidelines (JLA Guidebook). We encourage you to:
- Respond based on your personal experience
- Avoid being influenced by groups or organisations with commercial interests
- Share what truly matters to you as an individual
- Patients: You're welcome to have a support person assist you

What happens to my answers?
Our team of experts will first check if questions sent in have already been answered by existing research.

Unanswered questions will go to a second survey where people can vote on which questions are the most important. The top research priorities will be agreed in a final workshop.

Who can I contact for more information?
If you have questions, please contact Yangyang Peng at the Intensive Care Society using the email address below -

When does the survey close?
We will close the survey on Friday, 26th September 2025.
