Sounding rockets and sub-orbital activity |
Background
The purpose of this survey is to gauge understanding and opinion from industry on the regulation of sub-orbital activity in the UK.
For the purpose of this survey, ‘sub-orbital activity’ is considered to be:
- the use of ‘large rockets’, defined as a rocket of which the total impulse of the motor or combination of motors is more than 10,240 Newton-seconds by the Air Navigation Order 2016, at any altitude,
or
- the use of a rocket or other craft that is capable of operating above the stratosphere (taken to be 47km), but does not include space activity,
or
- a balloon that is capable of reaching the stratosphere (taken to be 47km) carrying crew or passengers, but does not include space activity.
Sub-orbital activity in the UK may be undertaken with a permission from the CAA under the Air Navigation Order 2016 or as part of a licence granted under the Space Industry Act 2018.
