UWWV New Volunteer Interest Survey

United Way of the Wabash Valley is a volunteer-driven organization that brings together people, needs, and resources to make a difference in the Wabash Valley.

We offer a number of opportunities for volunteer engagement. Our aim is to optimize the quality of volunteer engagement and provide flexible ways for volunteers to commit their time. Listed below are descriptions of volunteer opportunities at United Way. We hope at least one will align with your interests and schedules. As you read through the descriptions, please indicate any and all that you would consider participating in.

1.Are you interested in a volunteer role on the UWWV Community Impact Committee (CIC)?

Purpose: To understand and execute board directives, to be a big picture synthesizer on UWWV investments and programs, and to act as neutral subject matter experts.

Description:
  1. Advocate to the board about critical needs and ideal target beneficiaries.
  2. Implement investment priorities set by board.
  3. Oversee UWWV’s investment calendar.
  4. Review and score applications for funding (with help from additional volunteers).
  5. Ensure strong ROI on grantmaking.
  6. Encourage nonprofit collaboration with other community entities.

Committee composition:
  • Subject matter experts in UWWV focus areas (Youth Opportunity, Financial Stability, Heath Communities)
  • Representatives from counties served by UWWV (Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, Vigo, and Clark IL)
  • Community members with lived experiences related to UWWV mission
  • Members with grant-evaluating experience

Time commitment: Monthly meetings, plus additional team meetings

2.Are you interested in a volunteer role on the new Community Outreach and Engagement Committee?

Purpose: To provide subject-matter expertise that will guide the board’s strategic priority decision-making. Provide critical points of view that will influence UWWV’s investment priorities for the coming year as well as special project funding as it becomes available.

Description:
  1. Coordinate and participate in community conversations and listening sessions.
  2. Assist in prioritizing target beneficiaries and their needs.
  3. Collect information and use expert knowledge to inform CIC of community needs and funding priorities.
  4. Assist in application review and scoring.
  5. Coach applicants through application process.

Committee composition:
  • Subject matter experts in UWWV focus areas (Youth Opportunity, Financial Stability, Health Communities)
  • Representatives from counties served by UWWV (Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, Vigo, Clark IL.)

3.Are you interested in a volunteer role on the Fundraising Support Team?

Description:
  • Work on resource development-related events such as Power of the Purse, Annual Meeting, and leadership giving events.
  • Support workplace campaign efforts by working with United Way staff to coordinate a campaign or speak on behalf of United Way.
  • Act as ambassadors for United Way in the community.
  • Facilitate introductions to new resource opportunities/collaborations.

Time commitment: Periodic meetings based on event and campaign schedule.

4.Are you interested in participating in Reading Neighbors?


Description:
  • Visit an assigned first- or second-grade classroom once a month from January-May to read a preselected book to the students.
  • Includes classrooms in Vigo, Parke, and South Vermillion counties.

Time commitment: Once per month from January-May

5.Are you interested in participating in Real Men Read?


Description:
  • Male volunteers visit an assigned kindergarten classroom once a month from October-March to read a preselected book to the students. At the end of the visit, the students receive their own copies of the books.
  • Includes classrooms in all six counties in UWWV’s service area (Vigo, Parke, Clay, Sullivan, Vermillion, & Clark IL)

Time commitment: Once per month from October-March

6.Are you interested in a volunteer role on the Success By 6 Coalition?

Purpose: To invest in initiatives that support high-quality early learning experiences so that children enter school ready to succeed.

Description:
  • Coalition is comprised of professionals in fields related to early childhood education.
  • Identifies needs and helps develop strategies/investments to address them.

Time commitment: Monthly meetings, plus occasional additional subcommittee meetings

7.Are you interested in a volunteer role on the Wabash Valley Neighbors Helping Neighbors (WVNHN) Advisory Committee?

Purpose: WVNHN is a web-based program that connects local residents in need of simple home repairs with volunteers who have the time and skills to complete them. Overall goal is to build relationships and a sense of community.

Description:
  • Provide guidance to WVNHN program coordinator on direction of program.
  • Promote WVNHN in the community.
  • Volunteer for/adopts projects.

Time commitment: Quarterly meetings, plus time for individual projects

8.Are you interested in a volunteer role with Wabash Valley Neighbors Helping Neighbors?


Purpose: WVNHN is a web-based program that connects local residents in need of simple home repairs with volunteers who have the time and skills to complete them. Overall goal is to build relationships and a sense of community. Generally speaking, most of the projects posted on this website by neighbors seeking assistance are projects that can be accomplished by individuals, families, or groups, and do not require special tools, advanced skills, or a long time to complete. As of now this program is only available in Vigo County and the city of Brazil. A background check is required to participate in WVNHN.

Description:
  • Basic home repair and maintenance projects
  • Basic yard cleanup, maintenance, and landscaping projects
  • Technology or paperwork assistance
  • Shopping, errands, or moving assistance
  • Words of encouragement

Time commitment: You adopt a project when you have time to volunteer, and each project is different in scope and length of time to complete.
