Thank you for your interest in volunteering with ULI’s UrbanPlan. Below is a summary of the volunteer opportunity. It would help us greatly if you could respond to this short survey to confirm your level of interest and training. The next page has a few short questions that should only take you a few minutes to complete.
What is UrbanPlan? UrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging, and academically demanding classroom-based curriculum in which students learn about the fundamental forces that affect development. Its mission is to cultivate a sophisticated level of discourse among local stakeholders involved in land-use decisions through the education of tomorrow’s voters and leaders as a way to create better communities. Take a look at the UrbanPlan website to learn more, including a few short videos.
When? The following dates have been tentatively scheduled. More information will be shared with you as the dates get closer:
March (TBD) – Volunteer Refresher Training (via webinar)
March 19 (8-4pm)) - Volunteer Training (optional for existing volunteers)
March 20 (8-4pm) - UrbanPlan One Day with City of Charlotte Staff
September (TBD) - UrbanPlan University with UNCC’s MSRE Program
Fall – UrbanPlan High School (potential relaunch in Providence High School)
December - UrbanPlan One Day Centralina Council of Governments
How? Volunteers serve either as a Facilitator, who challenge students to improve their proposals, or a City Council Member, who selects a recipient for the request for proposals. There is no financial commitment, but it will require a time commitment of up to 3 hours for each volunteer shift.
Volunteer criteria: Effective facilitators have:
development project experience
the patience to question rather than advise or coach
the time and willingness to learn the details of the UP “case”
The most effective city council members:
have development project experience
have presented to city councils, planning commissions, etc.
assume and maintain the “city council member” role and do not lapse into “academic advisor,” “kindly adult,” “design charrette jury” behavior.
have the time and willingness to learn the details of the UP “case”
Why? Volunteers gain lifelong connections with fellow community leaders and cultivate the next generation of industry leaders. UrbanPlan makes our community stronger by helping to educate tomorrow’s voters, neighbors, community leaders, and land use professionals on the needs and desires of the public and to market forces.
