As Bermuda’s workforce and population both mature, the voices and contributions of older workers are increasingly important. While many people may plan for traditional retirement at age 65, changing norms in health, longevity, and economic need mean that many older adults are continuing to work, want to work, or could contribute more if given fair opportunity.

Yet current laws in Bermuda do not explicitly protect older workers from age-based discrimination in the workplace. The Human Rights Act 1981 does not include age as a protected characteristic for employment.

At the same time, demographic changes are reshaping the workforce. Older adults (those aged 65+) make up a growing share of Bermuda’s population, and the old-age dependency ratio—the number of seniors compared to the working-age population—is projected to rise significantly. This heightens the importance of ensuring fair access, opportunities, and supports for older workers.

Why we’re doing this survey:
We want to gauge awareness and perceptions of workforce equity for older adults in Bermuda and to understand lived experiences related to hiring, retention, advancement, and training. Your input will help us identify both barriers and opportunities that affect older workers and guide the development of policies and practices that better support an inclusive, age-equitable workforce.

What this survey hopes to achieve:
  • Identify existing barriers & practices that might disadvantage or discourage older workers.
  • Gather insights on how hiring, training, and advancement opportunities are experienced across age groups.
  • Understand public awareness and perceptions of workforce equity for older adults.
  • Inform possible changes—whether legislative, organizational, or cultural—that can better support older adults’ participation in the workforce.
Thank you for your time. Your insights will help shape initiatives aimed at strengthening workforce equity as people age. As a thank-you for completing this survey, providing your contact and demographic information will also enter you into a draw to win a $50 Lindo’s grocery voucher.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
