Should Northern Leopard Frog be listed as Endangered in the NWT?

Introduction to the survey

The northern leopard frog is currently listed as a Threatened species in the Northwest Territories (NWT). It was reassessed by the NWT Species at Risk Committee in April 2025. The Committee recommended this species be listed as Endangered due to the species’ small, isolated range and reports of declines from local communities, as well as their low genetic diversity and sensitivity to increasing threats. Threats include disease, drought, wildfire, and human disturbances such as hydro development.

Endangered’ means a species is facing imminent extirpation or extinction—it could be gone from the NWT in our lifetimes.
