Our Dream: A Climate Action and Resource Centre

We have a DREAM.

Neighbours for the Planet, Blue Dot York Region, Drawdown Richmond Hill, Richmond Hill United Church and Targeting Climate Change are working together to make our dream come true.

We would love to create a Climate Action and Resource Centre: a one-stop-shop for all things climate. We imagine the Centre to be a community-managed space where the public can come to explore and learn about managing climate change and what they can do to make a difference.

We want the Centre to be YOUR dream too! We want to know what kinds of workshops, activities, events and resources you would like to see there.

Shifting to Sustainable Energy - Learn about provincial and federal programs that support renewable forms of energy, eg. electric vehicle charging infrastructure, home retrofitting loans; municipal permitting and approval processes.

Food Waste Seminars - Learn how to reduce your food waste, how to use your food waste to create organic fertilizer.

Free Film Screenings - Watch a climate film followed by a Q & A session with local experts.

Plant Based Cooking Classes - learn how to make easy to prepare, healthy dishes for you and the planet.

Sustainable Living - Learn how to save more in the long term by shifting to Net Zero Homes.

Family Workshops - Learn how to repair small appliances and electronics, learn basic sewing skills, and learn how to cook easy and delicious plant based recipes.

Educational Workshops - Learn about Indigenous events and workshops, how to invest in the green economy, how to purchase climate-friendly products.

Climate Anxiety Seminar - Learn how to manage your anxiety about the future.

Repair Cafe - Get your items fixed instead of disposing them (small appliances and electronics, mending clothes).

Climate Presentations on Solutions - Learn from climate experts, environmentalists, and policy-makers.

Carpooling Seminar - Learn about existing carpooling web applications such as smart commute (from Metrolinx).

Green Technology Fairs - local businesses would showcase solar panels, batteries, geo-exchange equipment, electric vehicles, e-bikes, etc.

Seed Exchange Fairs - Exchange or buy seeds, learn about vegetable gardening, composting, rain collecting etc.

Educational Materials - Brochures, leaflets, and educational materials available in several languages.

Promotional materials - from a range of local firms that provide equipment and materials that reduce energy consumption in the home.

Resource - Teachers can learn about the latest on environmental science and climate change management.

Presentations - Request free presentations from local experts on climate science and renewable energy solutions for your school.

School Support - Partner with EcoSchools Canada to support school initiatives.

Student Support - Help students network and connect with other environmental groups.

Designated recycling area - Terracyle recycling boxes that recycles specific products (eg. coffee pods, crayons etc) and/or have vending machine to reward recycling of plastic bottles.

Free Space - Meeting space for local, not-for-profit, environmental groups focused on specific action (tree planting, regenerative agriculture, bike lanes, composting, reducing plastic waste, etc.)

Showcase - Learn ways in which you can make behavioural changes in your home and workplace that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Circular Economy - Learn about web portals to facilitate reuse of products that you want to dispose of .

Open Space circles - Have group discussions to support mental health and grief about climate concerns (Climate Anxiety).

Climate Socials - Get to know your neighbours and learn from each other about climate action you are taking in your home and community (coffee and plant based snacks will be provided).

Youth Specific Climate Socials - A space just for youth to gather and talk and support each other (coffee and plant based snacks will be provided).
