SEARA is a movement of Black, Indigenous, and racialized BC-based artists and cultural workers that aims to redistribute resources through data-driven action.
221A is a BC-based non-profit organization that works with artists, cultural workers, and designers to research and develop social, cultural, and ecological infrastructure. As a fiscal sponsor of SEARA, 221A provides support in administration, finance and facilitation.

Who can complete this survey?
- Staff, board members, and jurors who currently work or have worked in/with/for grant-making organizations in BC;
- Staff and board members who currently work or have worked in/with/for Arts, Culture, and Heritage organizations in BC;
- Independent artists and cultural workers who currently work or have worked within grant-making and Arts, Culture and Heritage organizations in BC; and
- Independent artists and cultural workers in BC.
What do we hope to understand from this survey?
Racial Composition:
- The racial composition of staff, board members, and jurors who currently work or have worked in grant-making/funding and Arts, Culture, and Heritage organizations.
- The racial composition of artists and cultural workers working independently or in partnership with Arts, Culture, and Heritage organizations in BC.
- To understand how independent artists and cultural workers perceive the effectiveness and impact of these policies.
- To understand how funding, grants and programming are distributed and whether they support equitable access for Black, Indigenous and racialized communities.
- To examine artists and cultural workers’ experiences with funding opportunities, programming and support in the sector including perceptions on equitable access, representation and support for Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities.
Why should you participate in this survey?
Your insights will help identify challenges, gaps, and opportunities for improving equity related to racial composition, policies, and funding distribution in the Arts, Culture, and Heritage sector. By participating in this survey, you will contribute to efforts promoting fair and equitable access to resources for Black, Indigenous and racialized artists and communities.
How is your anonymity and confidentiality maintained?
This survey is hosted on SurveyMonkey and can only be accessed via a general web link. This means that personal information, such as your email address, location, or name, is not linked to your survey responses. Your survey responses will be reported as group statistics, and the open-ended questions will be summarized into themes.
Are your responses mandatory?
You can choose not to respond to demographic questions by selecting “prefer not to answer.” However, your answers to these questions are valuable and add the important subtlety that our research requires.
