Ban the Bottle: Mammoth Lake Business Owners Petition

An online campaign was launched on November 19, 2019 by a group of local community members to garner support for Ban the Bottle Mammoth. The petition is in support of a ban on the sale of single-use plastics (24 oz. or less) in town containing water. Local residents, second homeowners, and people passionate about Mammoth Lakes responded and the petition currently has 3,000 signatures.

We are asking for your support as a business in the town of Mammoth Lakes to support this ban.

The Why?
As people who recreate outdoors and love the mountains, we all see the effects that single-use plastics have on the Mammoth Lakes area. Abandoned bottles on the side of a trail or floating in our lakes are not pictures that we, or our visitors want to take home.

Eliminating the use of single-use plastic water bottles will reduce negative impacts on the environment, including reducing the use of natural resources and energy; reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and helping to eliminate waste in landfills, roadside litter, and pollution to lakes, streams, and soils. Most importantly it will contribute to a cleaner and more welcoming Town of Mammoth Lakes.

The Facts
  • 1 million plastic bottles are produced every minute via Story of Stuff
  • Americans throw away 35 billion plastic water bottles every year via EcoWatch
  • Experts estimate that packaging a one-liter bottle of water uses three liters of water via Valley Water
The Fine Print/Common Questions
  • This ban only includes water and does not include: flavored water, enhanced water, sparkling water, etc.
  • The ban is proposed for bottles 24oz and less. Large bottles may still be sold.
  • How will people get water? There are tons of great solutions including: aluminum cans/bottles of water, installing a filling station and selling reusable water bottles at your location, and using our tap water.
Next Steps:
The committee will present the signatures of support to the Town Council later this spring with hopes of the ban being in place by late fall/early winter.
