All Elementary, Middle School and High School students are encouraged to create original artwork representing the importance of volunteerism and service.


The Poster Contest is an opportunity for students to showcase their artistic talents and inspire Michiganders to make a difference in their communities. Winners will have their poster signed by the Governor and be invited to attend the Governor’s Service Awards and a special reception. As the lead state agency for volunteerism, the Michigan Community Service Commission empowers youth to share their voice and be change makers. 20. Your Artist Statement can be as short as one paragraph, or as long as one page. It can be typed or neatly written. An artist statement is your way of introducing your poster in written form. You must answer the first question; the other four questions are optional.

1.  What message does your poster portray?  How do you hope it will inspire people to make a difference through volunteerism and service? (Required question)
2.  Why is it important for people to volunteer and make a difference? (Optional question)
3.  What was the inspiration for your images?  This could include artists who have influenced your work, or even how a certain technique is important to your work. (Optional question)
