Sumerland is a dream that developed from a long-held and shared desire to set up a smallholding, to rear our own animals and grow our own food and herbs. The idea was inspired by our children, who all register on the autistic spectrum at some level, and a growing need in a chaotic world for them to experience a deeper connection to nature.
We want to set up a sensory farm, which is a much-needed provision in this area, for young people who find themselves struggling with the pace of life, to provide a space for learning, for support, and to breathe.
We have 2 ¼ acres of land with rare breed Soay sheep, a variety of ducks and chickens, common and rare (including beautiful big Brahma chickens), geese and soon will have emu! We are developing herb and vegetable beds and nurturing an orchard of fruit trees, as well as nut trees and wild hedgerows that bear a variety of berries.
We want to allow very small groups of 2 -5 people or individual family groups to experience this space, enjoying the animals and, if desired, getting hands on with their care and / or working on the land.
We welcome your input by completing this questionnaire to enable us to provide an offering that helps fulfil the needs of all our children on a sensory level.
Thank you for your time in helping us with our dream,
Joolz & Nathan
