Give 5 hours of your time. Change a life.

When those who initially speak with a student are the ones who follow up with them, it GREATLY increases the chance that that person will get involved...and that they will encounter or re-encounter Christ in a way that can change their lives. The mission we're proposing can be undertaken in as little as a 5 hour commitment: 2 hours of tabling at the Clubs Fair or Street Fair, or 2 hours of presence in the house, one hour of phone calls, and two hours of in-person meet-ups (keep on reading if you can't commit to that...you can still be involved!).

Here's the mission, should you choose to accept it:

1. We only have two forms of outreach this year where we're hoping you'll help us with follow-ups: presence in the house to talk to people who come in for the free food, and presence at a table on either Clubs Day or the Street Fair (or both!). You are welcome to help for as much or as little as you like. If you end up talking to LOTS of people, we'll certainly arrange for some of your contacts to be contacted by front desk staff or other students to lighten the load!

2. While you're volunteering, engage students in conversation and identify students who are interested in taking a faith study or getting involved at Newman.

3. Sometime soon after, either later that afternoon or the next day at the latest, call the students you spoke with whom you identified as "interested" and arrange for in-person follow-ups with them sometime that week. Follow-ups can be done at Newman, or a coffee shop, or anywhere that's convenient for you both.

4. At in person follow-ups, feel free to introduce them around Newman and show them the house if you decide to meet here, and invite them to take a faith study or to consider meeting with a Welcome Mentor. If you have taken a faith study and are leading one, you can invite them to take one with you. If you are a Welcome Mentor and you and the student seem to connect well, you can suggest yourself as a mentor! Otherwise, we challenge YOU to take a faith study with that person!

We'll provide lots of training and support for you if you're open to doing follow-ups, but if for time or other reasons you're not able to commit to them, then that's no problem. You can indicate it below, and one of our front desk staff or another student will follow up with any students that you talk to. You can also help with one of the New Newmanite Suppers or the NCSC BBQ, and that will be a big help as well!

Thank you for being open to invest in someone's life in a way that could help them radically encounter the love of God...He'll do great things through you :-)

Question Title

* 2. Please indicate your t-shirt size so that we can give you a free shirt. It would be GREAT if you could wear Newman swag to your shifts as much as possible.

Question Title

* 4. OUTREACH EVENT #1- Wednesday, September 4- UTSU Clubs Fair (location: Hart House Circle)
  • This is THE biggest outreach opportunity of the fall! We'll have a table at the Clubs Fair, and there are A LOT of students we engage with, so if you're on board for follow-ups and you're free, this is the #1 event that we need help with. Those on the first shift of the day will meet at the Newman Centre.

Question Title

* 5. OUTREACH EVENT #2- Wednesday, September 11- St. George Street Festival (location: St. George Street between College and Hoskin)
  • You'll be part of the Street Festivals and will meet a TON of students!

Question Title

* 6. Monday, September 9- NCSC BBQ (location: Newman front walkway)
  • Joing the Newman Catholic Students Club in a BBQ to welcome new and returning students. They'll need LOTS of help to cook hotdogs and chat with new people! We'll also be giving away free SnoCones during this time!!

Question Title

* 7. Saturday, September 212 and Thursday, September 26- New Newmanite Supper (location: Newman Centre)
  • We will be inviting all those who are new to the community to join us for supper. We want them to meet people who are regular members of the community that they might see around from time to time, so please consider joining us! And because we had SO many new people come last year, we are having two separate suppers this year! For those who are able to help with set-up or clean-up, that's great, but if you can only come for the supper, please do! Your role during that time would simply be to welcome people and to be a friendly face for those who are new.

Question Title

* 8. This year we are offering a Welcome Mentor program. New students will be paired with returning students who can meet with them once a week for the first month of classes to help them navigate U of T, meet people at Newman, and facilitate their transition as they find a home here! Are you interested in having more information/signing up to be a Welcome Mentor? If you're definitely interested, you can head here and complete the form!
