* 3. Over the next year, there will be significant activity in the states to begin implementing the federal health reform law. What do you think you will most need from RWV during this time? (You may make more than one choice.)

Technical assistance and information about the implementation of the women’s reproductive health provisions in the law, including how to get the best possible interpretation of the abortion restrictions in my state.

Assistance in figuring out how to work effectively with health reform groups and coalitions to influence other aspects of the health reform implementation in my state (such as making the state insurance exchanges consumer-friendly, ensuring that insurers follow the rules on gender rating and covering pre-existing conditions, and trying to hold down increases in the cost of insurance)

Conference calls and webinars that will allow me to listen to experts describing the key issues of concern to women and give me the chance to ask questions.

An opportunity to come together with women’s health advocates in person to share information and strategies, such as at a national conference or regional forums.

* 7. RWV is considering sponsoring a national conference to bring women’s health advocates together in the fall of 2010. The national gathering would be an opportunity to map out the full picture of ways that women’s health advocates and activists will be engaged in health care reform implementation over the next two to four years and to share information and strategies on such topics as how to fight proposed bans on abortion in your state’s insurance exchange. We’d like your views:

I would find such a conference useful and would like to attend (no commitment to attend is being requested at this time)

I cannot attend any conferences without financial assistance because my organization has little or no travel funds

* 8. Which of these statements best characterizes your feelings about the new health reform law?

Generally positive: Millions more women and their families will gain health insurance coverage through Medicaid expansion and new federal subsidies to help people buy private insurance, and insurance companies will finally be prohibited from doing things like gender rating and denying us coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Mixed feelings: There are many good things in the law for women, but we paid a heavy price when abortion restrictions were added to the private insurance coverage to be offered in state exchanges.

Regret: The price women paid in the form of abortion restrictions was too high for the gains we got in the rest of the law.

Unfavorable: In addition to the abortion restrictions, the general approach of the law is unacceptable in that it does not include a national public option and steers millions of people into private health insurance plans.
