Name survey for middle school to be built in Jerome Village

Important background information

Thanks to the support of our community, Dublin City Schools is set to open a new middle school in Jerome Village, which will open in the fall of 2021.

In the fall of 2019, a committee consisting of community representatives, parents, and District staff began to meet to generate name suggestions for the District's new middle school.

As a member of the Dublin City Schools community, you are invited to provide input below regarding possible names for Dublin City Schools' new middle school to be built in Jerome Village. The committee's purpose is to recommend names to the Board of Education for their consideration, as the Board has the responsibility of choosing a name.

Board Policy 7250 - COMMEMORATION OF SCHOOL FACILITIES
The Board of Education is responsible for the naming of school buildings and/or District facilities. The Board may name the school building or facility after a person, geographical location, or landmark. The Board may wish to commemorate the building or facility by means of a plaque. If a school building or facility is named after an individual, that commemoration shall be reserved only for those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of education generally or the District in particular or to the well-being of the District, community, State, or nation. Any employee of the District thus honored must be deceased or no longer employed by the District prior to the Board's selection of his/her name for a school building or for the naming of a facility.

Bishop Middle School
Deane Brown Bishop’s paternal ancestor, Basil Brown, came to Dublin with his wife, Nancy, and their three children in 1826 from Baltimore, Maryland. He was a shoemaker by trade. This would be the start of the family’s long history in Dublin. Deane Brown Bishop was born to parents Basil and Susie Brown. She grew up on a farm where the AC Hotel by Marriott now stands in Bridge Park, where the family mostly raised corn. Bishop spent most of her childhood in her dad’s garage working on cars, rather than farming. She was the youngest of four children. Bishop’s two sisters, Ruth and Mary Emma Bailey – for whom Bailey Elementary School is named – were much older than her. Deane is the mother of Suzie Feasel, who worked in the DCS central office for 38 years and Deane's son-in-law Ralph Feasel worked in various positions across the District for more than 50 years, including 10 years as principal of Dublin High School.

Chi Weber Middle School
Chi was the Valedictorian of the 1941 graduating class of Dublin High School, and a US Marine Corps Captain serving during World War II and Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post #10691 of Dublin, a 33rd Degree Mason and Past Potentate of Aladdin Shrine - 1977. He was named Grand Leprechaun by the City of Dublin in 2004. Chi was president of the Ohio Federal Savings and Loan and retired from Mid America Federal in 1988 with 36 years of service. His life of service included the Dublin Board of Education, chairman of the Dublin Charter Commission, president of the Dublin Community Improvement Corporation, member of the Dublin Recreation Advisory Commission and active member with Dublin Historical Society. Throughout his long life, Chi was an ardent supporter of Dublin City Schools, serving in PTO organizations until he was 70 years old. The Weber family has deep roots in Dublin as both of Chi’s parents graduated from Dublin in 1907, and both their parents lived in Dublin as well.

Curry Middle School
Col. James Curry was one of the few Revolutionary officers who settled in Union County. He was born near Belfast, Ireland, in 1752, came to America with his father when he was ten years of age, and located in Augusta County, Va. After a most honorable service as an officer of the army throughout the Revolutionary war, he moved to Ohio in 1797, settling first in Ross County. In 1811, he came with his family to the territory now known as Union County. He was a member of the legislature when the county was organized, and was for many years one of its court judges.
Curry had four sons, one of which was a renowned poet and the others had a history of military service. His grandson, William Curry, fought in 50 battles and skirmishes in the Civil War and was captured in Alabama and was held prisoner until 1863. He was adjutant general for Gov. William McKinley from 1892-1896 and served as United States pension agent appointed by William Taft (1910-1913).

Curtis Artz, Jr. Middle School
Curtis Price Artz, Jr. was born in Jerome in 1915, and was valedictorian of the Jerome Township High School graduating class of 1932. He went to college and then was a surgeon in the military, becoming a commanding officer of the U.S. Surgical Research Unit and Chief of Research Service. His specialty was in burn care.
Artz went on to become chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of South Carolina. He provided a lot of the groundwork research for the first kidney transplant through his research into the role that lymphocytes played in transplanted organ rejection. Through his work, he authored and edited content in four books and published 144 articles in scientific journals and publications.

Ewing Middle School
Joshua and James Ewing were brothers and are credited as some of the first settlers in Union County in 1798. Joshua served as Justice of the Peace for Darby Township in 1803. He was also an elder in the Presbyterian Church established in 1809.
James opened the first store in Union County in 1810 and was first Postmaster of the Darby Creek Post Office. He was also the first sheriff and the first trustee of the Franklin County Bank and joined his brother as an elder of the Lower Liberty Presbyterian Church.

Headlee Middle School
Earl P and Bertha M (Leppert) Headlee had 14 children. In 1958, Bill Headlee was instrumental in founding the Dublin Athletic Boosters and later was a driving force behind the Dublin Athletic Hall of Fame. Bill Headlee worked for Dublin City Schools from the 1970s to the 1990s during which time he also was a volunteer assistant for the baseball team and ran the scoreboard. Bill was inducted into the Dublin Coffman Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Bill’s brother Roger Headlee also supported the baseball team and was a constant presence around athletic fields. Lee Headlee, class of 1947, served on the Board of Education for 12 years. He was married to Barbara (Rose) Headlee, class of 1947, who was a physical education teacher for 24 years and started the gymnastics program and the ski club at Dublin High School. The first female mayor of Dublin was Catherine Headlee, who was daughter-in-law to Earl and Bertha.

Seely Middle School
The Seely family is another name recognized with a long history in the Dublin area. The Seely family’s store, which was located in the village of Jerome, was operated by three generations of the family -- H.B., son Albert and grandson Thad. H.B. was also a pharmacist and created “Seely’s Manna Cordial” tonic which was sold in their store for a period of 70 years. They were known as a generous family providing extended credit or simply giving to those in need. The store was the “heart of Jerome” where people shopped, exchanged news and kept kids when the school bus was late. Fred Seely is a member of the Dublin City Schools Hall of Fame and was a longtime staff member for the District.
