CWDO Member Survey

On February 6, 2015 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the law which made it illegal for doctors to assist people to commit suicide.  This law had been in effect for 123 years.

Given that the law will change, Citizens with Disabilities-Ontario (CWDO) is concerned about safeguards to ensure that people with disabilities will not be targeted, coerced, or railroaded into a decision to commit suicide simply because home care or health care services are unavailable or inadequate.

At a time when our population is aging, and incidence of disability increases with age, we are concerned about the vulnerability of people with disabilities and seniors.

CWDO is writing a submission to the government and its advisory panel to suggest safeguards that we feel would offer reasonable protections to people with disabilities while respecting individuals’ rights.  We would like to understand the views of our members and member organizations as we prepare our submission.

Since the new law must be in place by February, we need to move very quickly. Your response to the survey questions below is needed by September 21st.

CWDO will use a summary of all responses to inform our submission.  Your individual submission will be anonymous and your privacy will be protected.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on this important issue.
