An estimated 60% of adult basic education and literacy students have learning disabilities. These circumstances often have a profound impact on the academic and personal lives of our adult learners. This session will provide a basic framework for understanding learning disabilities and how they impact adult learners seeking to improve their literacy skills. It will also provide an introduction to strategies for identifying and working with students who may have learning disabilities.

Session outcomes:

• Understand an overview of learning disabilities
• Define the term learning disabilities
• Understand key statistics regarding the incidence of learning disabilities
• Identify common characteristics of adults with learning disabilities
• State four types of learning disabilities
• Identify steps in the LD screening process
• Understand corps objectives of federal disability rights laws
• View a video and identify characteristics of LD
