About the Youth Advisory Group

Carers WA has an established Youth Advisory Group (YAG). Carers WA believe it is import that young people are at the centre of shaping what youth engagement looks like at Carers WA. We are currently recruiting two Young Carers aged between 16 to 25, this would be for a 12 month term with the option to extend for an additional 12-month term with members able to do a maximum of 24-month term.


What will I do as part of the Youth Advisory Group?

Over the 12 month term the group will:

  • Be involved in training and upskilling opportunities such as advocacy, working with diverse groups and writing policy.
  • Have a voice in programs, policies, and initiatives that affect young carers at Carers WA.
  • Meeting with staff and external stakeholders involved in driving change, such as advocacy groups, politicians, and others.

What is the commitment?


The meetings take place on Tuesday evenings from 4pm to 6pm. Meetings will run monthly.

The meetings will be held at Carers WA, 182 Lord Street in Perth. We will aim to be as flexible as possible, giving options for participation either online or in person. We will also be mindful of busy periods in your life, such as exams, cultural holidays, or commitments in your caring role.

There may also be opportunities to do additional small pieces of work outside of the meetings.


What will you receive as part of the YAG?

This is a paid position. YAG members are reimbursed:

  • $30 per hour for each meeting (Meetings are two-hours in duration)
  • $30 for work outside of meetings when required (i.e providing feedback on documents, designing, evet planning, etc...)
  • Reasonable travel expenses, including public transport or mileage too and from your home, work, or school, as well as any parking expenses), excluding taxi's (except in exceptional circumstances).
  • Food is provided for in-person meetings and can be arranged for those living regionally where delivery is possible.
This will be paid into your nominated bank account.


Am I eligible?

To be eligible for the YAG you must:
  • Be aged 16 to 25 years old
  • Live in Western Australia
  • Be a current or previous young carer*
  • Have a willingness to share ideas
  • Commit to attending the regular group meetings (to the best of your ability)
  • Have support networks in place that will enable you to participate in the group.
  • Be willing to apply for a Working with Children Check if you are over 18 (the application fee will be paid for and we will help you with this).
  • Have parent/guardian consent to participate if you are under the age of 18.

How do I apply?

To apply you need to fill out this application by Sunday, 22nd June. Someone can help assist you in filling out the application such as a parent, teacher, youth worker, or elder.

*A young carer is a young person who provides unpaid care and support to a family member and/or friend living with a disability, mental health challenge, long term health condition (including a chronic condition or terminal illness), alcohol or other drug dependency, or who is frail aged.
