RHS Climate Change Resilience: Heatwave Impact on Gardens

Thank you for choosing to complete our citizen science survey on the impact the summer heatwave is having on gardens.

Introduction

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense, and longer in duration across the UK as a result of climate change. These events place significant stress on garden plants, affecting their growth, survival, and susceptibility to pests and diseases. While scientific studies have examined drought tolerance and heat stress in controlled environments, far less is known about how plants in real UK gardens respond during actual heatwave conditions.

Gardeners across the UK observe plant behaviour daily, providing a unique opportunity to gather large‑scale, real‑world evidence. Understanding which plants die, which suffer but survive, and which thrive during heatwaves will help the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) develop guidance for climate‑resilient gardening and inform future planting recommendations.

This survey aims to capture detailed, plant‑level information from gardeners during a defined UK heatwave. By analysing patterns across plant types, regions, sun exposure, watering practices, and pest/disease involvement, we can identify vulnerability and resilience trends. The results will support gardeners, researchers, and policymakers as the UK adapts to a warming climate.

This survey will remain open to complete until midnight on the 30th September 2026.
