Thank you for your interest in the Mystery Experiment, a social science experiment being conducted by TED, with input from behavioral scientists.

It’s key to the scientific goals of this experiment that we don’t reveal too much about it up front. Instead, we need to ask you some questions. Before submitting your responses, please review the following explanations on how we will use your data collected from this survey.

Who is managing this?

This experiment is being managed by TED Conferences LLC, located at 330 Hudson Street, New York NY 10013. It is referenced on this web page on TED’s website.

Who is qualified to enter?

Participants must be at least 21 years of age, reasonably fluent in English, have an active Twitter account, and a resident of one of these 7 countries: USA, Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Australia, Canada, and the UK. Anyone working for TED (as employee, contractor, or intern, part-time or full-time) may not apply. Neither may their family members.

What is the purpose of this survey?

We want to recruit a broad sample of participants in this experiment, and responses will be evaluated based on social science guidelines. Please answer all questions honestly and to the best of your ability.

Will my information be sold or shared with any other third parties?

TED will never sell your personal information.  We will utilize the data solely for the scientific questions the Mystery Experiment is attempting to answer. Your responses may therefore be shared with academic researchers for data analysis and research. This includes data provided by you, and publicly available data associated with your Twitter account. However, no personal contact information will be shared (e.g. your name, email, etc). Any data shared with researchers will be encrypted, password protected, and only accessible to our trusted research team.

How long will my data be stored?

TED will store your personal data in accordance with TED's privacy policy. You may at any time ask that we delete your data by submitting a request to mysteryexperiment@ted.com. If you are not selected for participation in this experiment, or if you decide not to proceed with the experiment when you discover its nature, TED will, within one month, delete any personally identifiable data. And if you are selected and agree to proceed, personally identifiable data will be discarded and deleted from all records within a year of the completion of the Mystery Experiment.
