We are conducting a survey of New Mexico agencies, organizations, companies, and water professionals to better understand current practices for water quality data collection and reporting. The goal of this survey is to identify the formats, templates, and data standards currently in use. The information gathered will help inform the development of a “Best Practices” document for water quality data, being prepared by the Water Data Initiative program at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources.

The New Mexico Water Data Act (NMSA 1978, § 72-4B) states:

“Water research undertaken with state funding shall comply with the common water data standards and best practices developed by the [Water Data Initiative] agencies.”

In support of this mandate, the Water Data Initiative is creating best practices documents that provide clear guidelines and formatting standards for sharing data with the initiative. One such document, Best Practices for Sharing Water Level Data with the New Mexico Water Data Initiative has already been published. This survey will help shape the upcoming best practices document focused specifically on water quality data.

Your response to this survey is highly valuable, and will help us develop a useful best practices document!
