SHIFT operates at the intersection of outdoor recreation, conservation and public health to protect our natural world (see here for more information).

Each year, we research individuals, organizations and initiatives from around North America that promote and advance the health benefits of outdoor recreation and evaluate their work using specific criteria: Impact, Innovation, Replicability, and “Outside Rx” (the health benefits of time outside).

The work determined to be most impactful, innovative and replicable is considered for The SHIFT Awards. (A complete list of work researched to date and criteria used in our evaluations may be found here.) Representatives of official selections for the Awards are invited to share their work with participants at the annual SHIFT Festival.

The theme for The 2020 SHIFT Festival, which will take place October 16-18 in Jackson Hole, WY, is "Healthy by Nature." The program will complement evidence for nature’s health benefits with best practices from around the country that are connecting people to time outside in impactful, innovative and replicable ways.

This survey is designed to capture information about your work and where it fits within the broader national effort to promote and advance the health benefits of exposure to nature. It also serves as the nomination form (self-nominations are welcome) for the seven categories of The 2020 SHIFT Awards:
  • Business Leadership
  • Non-Profit Leadership
  • Public Land-Management Innovation
  • Health and Nature Champion
  • Youth Engagement
  • Technology
  • Research
To evaluate the work’s Impact, we will consider whether it has produced measurable, meaningful, and long-term improvements in its community, economy and/or surrounding ecosystem.

To evaluate Innovation, we'll consider whether it provides unique or new approaches to the challenges it seeks to address.

To evaluate Replicability, we'll consider how easily it could be scaled to other communities.

To evaluate Outside Rx, we'll consider whether it helps to advance and promote the health benefits of exposure to or contact with nature.

The deadline to apply for the 2020 SHIFT Awards is June 30.

By filling out this survey, you are simultaneously contributing to our research and nominating work for the SHIFT Awards. We appreciate your assistance. If you have questions or need more information, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@shiftjh.org.

Thanks, and see you outside—

The SHIFT Team
