Purpose of the Research:

I (Carmen Pedersen) am conducting this study as a research project which is part of a course called ANTH498 - Advanced Independent Study. I will receive three credits towards my  degree upon completion of this course. I am researching the ways in which our everyday language and the language we are exposed to changes societal dynamics and creates an “other”, particularly in the context of immigration. I wish to understand how language can cause harm and how that harm can be reduced. After collecting information from this study, I would like to use it in combination with the other parts of my research (literature review, analysis of news headlines) and produce a pamphlet on informed language choice that discusses why the language we use is important and should be carefully considered.
