Artist & Public Life Residency Program

Located in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana, this long-term affordable housing residency program is an innovative approach to supporting artists who use their talents and skills to help drive positive change in the community. Five homes are co-owned with the artists. The others are affordable rental homes.

At Big Car Collaborative we're working to create a perpetual system to help avoid displacement of artist neighbors from affordable housing while artists work, in part, to collaborate with other neighbors to boost the culture, creativity, livability, and economy of the local and greater community.

APLR's goals are to support a society and community that are equitable, inclusive, creative, welcoming, respectful, empathetic, connected, curious, informed, adventurous, healthy, and happy. Read more about APLR here

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A RESIDENT ARTIST?

We view the label of artists broadly, to include creatives, makers, culinary arts, designers - anyone who considers themselves an artist.

How does it work?

• Residency artists receive marketing and research support from Big Car staff and have access to shared resources, including tools like lawn mowers, etc.

• Artists work, through their practices, on residency projects and approaches they design. Artists also participate in First Friday events and other collaborations on the block.

• Artists dedicate an estimated 16 hours per month to working with the public in the community, doing research, connecting with neighbors, etc. And they share regularly about the work with each other and Big Car staff artists.

• Artists have opportunities to participate in Big Car organized exhibition and collaboration opportunities. We encourage partnerships between resident artists, visiting artists, other artists, and Big Car staff artists.
