WHO IS CYAN?
The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting youth and young adult tobacco prevention and advocacy throughout California.
 
What is COUGH?
COUGH (Campuses Organized and United for Good Health) is a statewide student-led coalition dedicated to ensuring healthy college and university campuses free of tobacco and tobacco industry presence. The COUGH Student Leadership Board is made of 10-15 undergraduate and graduate students interested in working closely with CYAN staff on specific projects for statewide college and university smoke and tobacco-free efforts.

What will I get from this experience?
  • Acquire personalized training experience in the fields of policy advocacy, public health, tobacco control, community organizing, and leadership development.
  • Get connected with organizations that are hiring in the fields of public health, community organizing, tobacco treatment, and tobacco education.
  • Network with other college advocates from around the state and gain ideas for your campus.
  • Strengthen public speaking and communication skills by providing presentations and trainings to peers and professionals in the field.
  • Participate in policy advocacy activities such as meeting with decision-makers, creating a policy change strategy plan, and promoting the benefits of a smoke and tobacco-free campus.
  • Develop marketing and messaging skills by conducting research and designing messaging.
  • Get up to date on the latest tobacco and marijuana use trends and products.
  • Increase experience for resume/graduate school 

WHAT WOULD MY COMMITMENT TO COUGH ENTAIL? 
  • Attend 2-3 weekend board meetings in Sacramento. CYAN will pay for all expenses associated with travel and the attending the retreat. 
  • Sign up for a year-long project of your choice in the areas of advocacy, education, or tobacco-treatment.
  • Attend project-team teleconference meetings as needed (typically once a month).
  • Review 1-2 educational materials and provide feedback through an online survey.
  • Conduct local outreach by (your choice): conducting presentations on campus or in your community, hosting campus-based events, or meeting with decision-makers on your campus or at the state level.
  • Stay in regular communication with CYAN staff and the rest of the COUGH board via email, phone, or internet.

APPLICANTS MUST BE:
  • Enrolled in a California college or university during the 2023-2024 school year.
  • Able to serve a one-year term (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024).
  • Willing to become active with tobacco prevention, treatment, or policy activities on their college campus or in their community.
  • Able to commit time to work, meetings, and travel associated with serving on board.
  • Able to respond to email and text communication on a regular basis.
  • Hard-working, enthusiastic, team players
  • Willing and able to attend virtual Zoom meetings and travel to in-person COUGH meetings, trainings, and conferences in Sacramento and surrounding areas.
